Carnatic Vocal
The mother art — shruti, sarali varase and the timeless kritis of the Trinity, taught in the guru-shishya spirit.
Mathikere · Bengaluru
VL Bhat's Academy is Bengaluru's home for Carnatic vocal, flute, tabla, keyboard, guitar and fine arts — taught with tradition, nurtured with heart, and certified through India's leading music examination boards.
The Guru behind the Gharana
For decades, Varalakshmi L Bhat has devoted herself to the twin arts she loves most — music and painting. What began as a passion blossomed into an academy where hundreds of students have taken their first steps from shruti to stage, and from sketch to canvas.
Her teaching philosophy is equal parts discipline and delight: rigorous enough to clear graded examinations, joyful enough that students never want to miss a class.
“Art is not taught. It is awakened — one note, one stroke at a time.”

What we teach
The mother art — shruti, sarali varase and the timeless kritis of the Trinity, taught in the guru-shishya spirit.
The South Indian venu — gamakas, varase and kritis breathed into ragas, one phrase at a time.
The North Indian bansuri — meend, alaap and the meditative ragas of the Hindustani tradition.
Taal, theka and the eloquent language of the hands — rhythm training for life.
Staff notation in the C-D-E-F system — scales, chords and graded pieces in the global standard.
Film songs and classical melodies played by ear in the sa-re-ga-ma system — the keyboard, the Indian way.
From first chords to campfire confidence — acoustic foundations done right.
Pencil, watercolour and canvas — young artists learn to see before they learn to draw.
Breath, balance and stillness — asana and pranayama that ground young artists and grown-ups alike.
Recognition that travels with you
Every program at VL Bhat's Academy follows a structured, graded syllabus. Students appear for periodic examinations and earn certifications through Bangiya Sangeet Parishad — affiliated with Rabindra Bharati University, Calcutta — credentials recognised across India.
From a child's very first grade to senior proficiency levels, we prepare each student methodically — theory, practicals and stage presence included.
Theory and practical examinations are held in structured annual cycles, with full preparation provided.
Structured levels from beginner to senior proficiency, with annual exam cycles and transparent assessment.
Certificates issued through Bangiya Sangeet Parishad, affiliated with Rabindra Bharati University, Calcutta — recognised across India.
Annual recitals, kutcheris and exhibitions — because certificates matter, but confidence matters more.
When school's out, art is in
Every summer, the academy transforms into a playground of music, rhythm and colour. Children explore multiple art forms, make friends, and end the camp with a grand showcase for proud parents.

Words from our families
A wonderful place to learn music. There's so much positive energy in every class — you feel it the moment you walk in.
The best place to learn music. Almost every instrument is taught under one roof, there are courses for every level, and online classes too. The teachers are genuinely kind.
A haven for music lovers. The teachers are excellent — my daughters attend keyboard classes and they look forward to every single session. I love this place.
The classes are excellent, and the fees are honest and affordable — it's rare to find both in one place.
A very good academy in every way — music and instruments of all kinds, taught with real care. Highly recommended for anyone beginning their musical journey.
I joined for the summer camp and stayed for three years. Varalakshmi ma'am makes every class feel like a celebration of art.
